- three lives and company, new york city, new york, usa. named after gertrude stein's book that inspired the theme. recommended by john!
- mcnally jackson, new york city, new york, usa. large independent bookstore and looks v pretty. reason enough.
- living batch bookstore, albuquerque, new mexico. a small press and author supporting store that sold underground work in the old times. allen ginsberg hung out here!
- el ataneo grand splendid, buenos aires, argentina. housed inside a grand old theatre with murals on the ceiling and three stories of books surrounding the centre.
- kanda jimbocho, tokyo, japan. an actual book town! the dream!
- giggles, chennai, india. the tiniest square footage but a cultural hub of indian writers. shashi tharoor etc., vouch for this and the owner is an author (the tales series).
- tell a story, lisbon, portugal. a mobile bookstore in a van. curious to see how this works.
- livraria lello, porto, portugal. picture the grandest staircase, stained glass ceilings and neo-gothic design, as well as, of course, many wonderful historic books.
- richard booth's bookshop, hay-on-wye, wales, uk. another town of books (and the second oldest one in history).
- bart's books, ojai, california. a giant outdoor independent bookstore against a backdrop of oak and sycamore trees.
- munro's books, vancouver island, canada. in a neoclassical heritage award winning building, so this has got to be pretty spectacular.
- salts mill, saltaire, yorkshire, uk. a giant mill (now a heritage site) with rows and rows of ancient books.
